At one time or another we all probably have dreamed about what we could accomplish if we had unlimited resources.
Of course, for most of us the “unlimited resources” situation never progresses beyond that dream stage.
But maybe that doesn’t always matter.
Just this morning, Jay York, EMSI’s senior social media strategist, was sharing with me how anyone can begin growing the number of followers they have on social media right now, using nothing more than the resources they already have at hand.
Before you know it, you could have an impressive social media network of potential clients or customers, connecting them to your website and staying in front of them as much as possible until the day arrives when they have a need for what you have to offer.
The payoff can be a long time coming, but just getting out there and being a part of their thought process at some level is important. That’s why even well-established brands such as McDonald’s or Coca-Cola – companies that need no introduction – continue to advertise through traditional channels as well as on social media to keep their products in front of you. They are after that top-of-mind awareness.
So let’s take a look at how you can grow your following on social media by using the resources you already have available. Here are a few of Jay’s tips:
- Make use of current contacts. You probably already have an email list of clients or customers, plus people who have expressed an interest in what you have to offer. You may also have a newsletter list. Draft an email encouraging these people to follow you on social media. Sure, they are already aware of you and know your product or service, but they have followers on social media who may know nothing about you. They’ll be able to share your tweets, Facebook posts and other social media activity with their friends and followers, helping you to expand your connections and spread your message.
- Incorporate social media into other promotional activities. The more you can let people know about your social media platforms, the better. For example, when visitors come to your office or when you have a booth or speak at seminars, let people know how to connect with you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or wherever else you may reside in the social media universe. Some of them may pull out their phones right then and there to follow you. You also should include your social media information in brochures, on business cards or any other way you might be communicating with potential customers or clients.
- Make use of social media ads. For a relatively small amount of money, you can take advantage of advertising on social media to grow your following. Social media ads can be used to laser target consumers most likely to be interested in what you have to offer, helping you to find people you otherwise might not have connected with.
Certainly, even though these efforts won’t require a large financial investment on your part, whenever you’re marketing yourself on social media there is an investment of time.
To get the most out of your efforts, you’ll want to make sure you, someone on your staff or someone you hire is able to devote the necessary time – posting useful information regularly and interacting with your followers.
That will keep them coming back – and one day some of them will take the next step, graduating from being followers to being loyal customers or clients.
